Food and fuel: two key elements of human prosperity and survival that have grown scarce as the global population has continued to grow. According to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, droughts and increased demand have led to unacceptably high rates of child andmaternalmortality across the world (1). Increased fuel costs, the organizations say, have also contributed to the rising price of staples like corn and soybean oil (2). A former Illinois farm boy, James Birchler has developed a technique that may help tackle these seemingly intractable issues. Now a Curators’ Professor at the University of Missouri and a recently elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, Birchler integrated decades of research on plant genetics to create synthetic maize chromosomes. These chromosomes, which propagate naturally in corn, can be outfitted with genes for drought tolerance, biofuel production, or other beneficial properties to produce stable lines of bioengineered crops that may help address some of the global crises that threaten us.
